In India street dogs are not viewed in a positive light. Most people opt to get breed dogs such as Labradors and German Shepherds, leaving street dogs to suffer on the roads in India. However, that is not the case in Canada. There is a big demand for adopting dogs and people will happily open their homes to what are known as "stray dogs"
We need your help to make these adoptions possible!
The Steps
In India (Delhi or Mumbai):
If you are traveling on a flight that accepts dogs, you can be a flight volunteer for dogs in need! Most of these flights are Air Canada flights. Once you submit the application below, we will let you know if your flight allows dogs.
The dog will be in a crate, ready to travel and will meet you outside of the Delhi or Mumbai Airport in India
You will be handed their complete paperwork, which includes vaccination records of the dog and all certificates
In Delhi, a Pet Relocation Agent will go inside the airport with you, and will stay with you for the whole process. You will "check in the dog" at the flight counter. The dog will travel on your name, but he/she will NOT sit with you inside the flight. Instead, the dog will go into the baggage area. We will reimburse you for the Air Canada dog ticket, which is usually $300 CAD.
Once you check in the dog at the counter, airport staff with ask you to take the dog out of the crate for 2 minutes while they scan the crate. In Delhi, a pet relocation agent will do this part.
After the crate has been scanned, you can proceed to your security check! You will now see the dog in Toronto.
In Toronto:
Once you land, you will pick up your bags and the dog will arrive close by to where the bags are. Once you see the dog, you will text us!
If you need help, you can hire a porter for $10 or $20 (which we will reimburse) and he will push the dog in a cart for you to customs.
You will show the customs officer all of the dog's paperwork such as vet reports, invoice, B3 forms, etc. You will be asked to pay a customs fee of around $40 per dog (which we will reimburse) At the same time, another ACZ volunteer will be at another commercial import office paying tax for this dog. Once all payment is done by you and the other volunteer, the dog will be released. You can take the dog and make your way out of the airport.
A volunteer will be outside of the airport waiting to receive the dog from you.
That's it! Thanks to YOU a street dog will have a better home!
